A perl script, which searches in many files according to file date and pattern between all input keys.
-
The script has similar characteristics as the script, which is available almost on each page in this site (see at the bottom of this page:new pages on this site).
In my site, it is targeted to locate and list all files with specified date and that contain all the given search words.
I have a script, which stores in plain text, all e mails, from a given outlook folder. outlook folder to text This script can be very helpful in searching those mails.
First I just use grep with regular expression to look for interesting search words. Than comes this script to narrow the list of possibilities.
-
The differences are that this script works on files with a suffix .txt and that the output file list uses simple print to display regular text.
-
The perl script uses hash tables to simplify code development and improve performance.
Script Operation Flow:
The script first makes sure user entered only legal characters namely letters and numbers.
Next it creates a list of all files to be searched, based on the first parameter: how many day ago was the file created.
Per each file in the list, a grep command is executed with each search word.
All files, that each grep succeeded, are displayed.
The perl script can be downloaded from: code
